Direction and Screenplay:
The outline of the film sounds quite similar to a few family drama films but the treatment is more entertaining, engaging and commercial. Pandiraj has masterfully entwined a serious family drama with highly enthralling commercial elements, which form the USP of Chinna Babu. Apart from comedy, Pandiraj perfectly showcased the family emotions and importance of farmers in his style.
And there are a few emotional sequences in the film, which will allow you to sympathize with the characters. The film’s director truly deserves a big thumbs up for highlighting the importance of farmers and few social concepts. However, Pandiraj not only succeeds as a director, he also won several hearts of the audience with the heart-touching family emotions and social message.
Karthi fits the bill as a young farmer and portrays his role with an ease. His style and charm are impeccable and Karthi needs a special applause for his brilliant expressions. Sayessha looks too cute and did justice to her role. The versatile actors Sathyaraj, Bhanupriya lived in their characters as usual. Rest of the cast, Priya Bhavani, Arthana, Viji Chandrasekar excelled in their respective roles. Comedian Soori’s funny one-liners are excellent and the scenes between Karthi and Soori evokes few laughs.
Sneaking into the technical aspects of the film, cinematographer Velraj must be lauded for his exceptional efforts in creating some fantastic frames. The visuals were very impressive and serve the purpose of the family and rural backdrop. The music director Imman needs a special mention and his BGM is probably a huge asset of the film. Editing is good. The production values are top-notch and so is the artwork and action episodes.
Top 3 Thumbs-Up Elements:
• Karthi’s brilliant acting skills
• Family Emotions
Top 3 Thumbs-Down Elements:
• Predictable storyline
• Tamil nativity flavor
• Heavy dose of sentiment scenes in the second half
On the whole, with strong characterization, top-notch performances, high rural values, and strong message related to agriculture and farmers, Chinna Babu is an interesting ride of family drama and comedy.
